Conquer the Big Picture!
Developmental editing for the self-published author.
Hi, writers! You’ve finished your manuscript draft, maybe took it to a few beta readers, and now you’re ready for the next step. Amazing! Writing a book is not a solo mission, and it’s so important to have a team of supporters to make your work perfect.
One of the first and most crucial steps in the editing process is developmental editing. This evaluates the big picture of what’s being told in the story. Are your character arcs intriguing enough? Is your plot consistent and flows well from one scene to the next? Is your pacing on point?
All of your amazing ideas are already on the page! The characters are growing and the world you’ve built is pieced together not only in your imagination but in an actual manuscript. Now that you’ve created your own connection to the book, it’s time to trust it with an experienced editor.
Kirsten McNeill,
Developmental Editor
Hi! I’m Kirsten, a writer and editor since 2015 working with fellow indie authors. I studied Creative Writing in college, and continue to find ways to improve my skills by:
- Attending online courses such as Grammar for Writing Professionals.
- Reading books such as The Positive Trait Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi, Self-Editing For Fiction Writers by Renni Browne and Dave King, and On Writing: A Memoir Of The Craft by Stephen King.
- Joining Facebook groups to connect and gain insight from the writing and reading community.
Choosing an editor is so hard! It has taken me five trial runs, an expensive hit to my pocket book and three books to figure this out. When I ran across Kirsten I knew she was talented, and not only that, she is one of the most positive and uplifting people I have ever known. Finally, I have found the editor for me. Kirsten is firm but gentle, giving the perfect explanations, comments and examples. So not only is the editing going to make the book better, but I can learn as an author too! We work well together and I can honestly say I can call my editor a friend. This is the type of connection we as authors all want in an editor. I highly recommend Kirsten, she does top notch work. I feel confident knowing I can send her my work, it will come back for me to polish and ready for the world!

How Developmental Editing Works
When I return a document, it has track changes and comments, and you receive a quick summary on what I’ve done and liked about your work. Once you’ve had a chance to review, you’re free to ask questions to clarify my comments. If you need help beyond that, we can discuss if more services are needed or just a quick answer.
I love working with self-published authors since I am one myself, and helping you bring your book to publication will be the highlight of my day. I’m an avid reader of thriller novels, but also love urban fantasy and contemporary romance (and always looking to expand).
